Dec 2004 and Jan 2005 - Newcastle, England

We are now in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, a city which sits in the North-East of England, a couple of hours South of Scotland. Two of Valeria's friends, Sandra and Sisto, came over to see us at the end of December, which was a great opportunity for us to go around a few places ourselves. The first picture shows the traditional style red telephone boxes, which are these days disappearing in favour of more modern style telephone boxes. We took this picture in Durham, a small and picturesque medieval village near Newcastle.

Below left, you can see Whitley bay, a beach on the outskirts of Newcastle. It is a beautiful beach, but far too cold at this time of year. If we actually get a day of good weather in the summer then it should be a good spot, with many cute shops and cafes in the area. The beach is only 25 minutes by metro from our house so how about everyone popping up here for a beach party in the summer? Below right a bar in Whitley Bay, one of the many bars/cafe's. Pablova is actually one of the nicknames Valeria uses for me, but don't tell anyone.

As many of you know, England is famous for its pubs. Below left Valeria and I are enjoying a few pints in an English Victorian style pub. If you are ever in Newcastle then a pint of Guinness for me and a half a pint of cider for Valeria please. Below right, in the park around the river in Durham, you can see from the left: Sisto, Omar and Sandra. Sisto and Sandra came from Italy to visit us, while Omar came from France to visit one of Valeria's friends, a French girl who lives and works in Newcastle.

The photo below left, was also taken in Durham. In the main square it was possible to take pictures with birds of prey, like this beautiful owl. Hunting with birds of prey is an ancient English tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. Today it is part of our folklore. Below right a view of the river in Durham. Notice the lovely grey sky which is also something you become accustomed to in England.

The two pictures below were taken in Durham. Here you can see from a distance, the famous Durham Cathedral. Durham also has a medieval castle and a very old university.

Last but not least, this month's mystery picture is below. Can you guess what it is?
Last months mystery picture that we took was a lamp in Valeria's mum's kitchen.
